The School of Pharmacy was founded in 1958. In 1965, the Evening Division was established, which later on became the second section of the school in 1997. In 1993, the School was divided into two divisions, modern pharmacy and traditional Chinese pharmacy. These two divisions were then merged into five-year program in 2000. Our Master program was started in 2004. The second section of the school was cancelled in 2005 and the students were allocated to the Day Division. The Ph.D program was established in 2006. The mission of the undergraduate program is to train excellent pharmacy professionals; and the mission of the postgraduate programs is to nurture pharmacy research manpower and teachers. The character lays emphasis equally on modern pharmacy and traditional Chinese pharmacy for the development of teaching and the research in clinical and community pharmacy, and the establishment of a combination of Chinese and modern pharmacy education to the pharmaceutical biotechnology research objectives.
Freshmen of the School study the common core curriculum, general education, and other infrastructure subjects. In the second, the third, the fourth, and the fifth years, they receive basic pharmacy education and specialist subjects in clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical biotechnology, community pharmacy, and other advanced courses. Before graduation, students are required to spend one year of clinical internship in hospital pharmacy or in a modern pharmaceutical manufactory in Taiwan. Graduates are entitled to take the National Examination for Pharmacists for official license. Both the master and the doctoral program are divided into three sections, including Pharmaceutics, Clinical Pharmacy and Biotechnological Pharmacy. All the programs are concentrated in the development and education of professional research.
Students who pass the national examination have a wide variety of career openings to choose from. They should be able to obtain positions in pharmaceutical companies and work in the Department of Production, Quality Control or Sales. They can also engage themselves in R & D for developing new drugs. Or they can work as sales representatives for pharmaceutical companies. As for the jobs in the hospitals, graduates can work in dispensing and pharmaceutical management system, as well as in pharmaceutical information management system in collaboration with physicians about the clinical administration of drugs.
Pharmacists can also work in the community or in information agencies to open their own practice. Moreover, there is a wide range of research job opportunities in life sciences, such as immunology, biochemistry, genetic engineering, and in fields related to chemistry, like natural chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and instrument analysis.
Students can pursue further study domestically or abroad, and they are of course ideally qualified for the programs of post-baccalaureate medicine and Chinese medicine.
Currently, the graduates have already been distributed various strata of the community, including city and county Director of Health, university professors, director of the hospital pharmacy, pharmaceutical director, supervisors of R & D units, general managers of pharmaceutical companies, and large group of pharmacists providing clinical services.
The School of Pharmacy provides a flexible, lively, and diversified learning environment for students, in which they can look for a personally rewarding and socially useful career. In order to cultivate pharmacy professionals of highest caliber and keep abreast of world trends, the School was upgraded to College of Pharmacy as China Medical College had got promoted to China Medical University. Combining the pharmaceutical research teams inside and outside the school and focusing on biotech-oriented direction of research in our master and doctoral program, we will make great strides to become one of the very best institutes of pharmacy in the world.
